Brig. Gen. John Fulton Reynolds and Catherine May Hewitt enter into a secret engagement before he reports to the Army of the Potomac. She promised not to marry if he were killed, and became a nun after his death at Gettysburg in 1863.

Poignant painting

This is the first of these portraits that I purchased and it is my favorite. It captures the emotions of saying farewell and not knowing what the future may hold. Gen. Reynolds is a special favorite of mine and I display this painting proudly.
